Total Of About 5,400 Battle Casualties Of Which Nearly 900 Were Killed. That's About A Ratio Of One To Five Of Those Who Were Killed In Action And Died Of Wounds To The Wounded Who Survived. This Is Compared To Ratios Of About 1 To 2 And Even Greater In Previous Wars-That Such A Much Higher Ratio Survived Can Be Attributed To The First Class Medical Service Of The Regiment And Indeed Of The Entire U.S.Army. The High Casualty Rate Did Not Mean That Each Unit Of The Regiment Was Wiped Out About 2 1/2 Times-The Number Of Men Who Entered Europe With The Regiment Remaining In Each Rifle Co.At The End, Averaged About 30,Many Of Whom Were Cooks, Drivers And Mechanics.
